Irving Celebrates Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month with Big Dog Adoptions

Large black dog wearing glasses thinks he's a big deal.

October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, an annual event to encourage residents to save dogs’ lives and enhance their own lives by adopting from a shelter or rescue group. Each year, millions of dogs in shelters and under the care of rescue volunteers await adoption.

Big Dogs, Big Deals

It’s also the perfect time to open hearts and homes to a new member of the family. Stop by the Irving Animal Care Campus (IACC), 4140 Valley View Lane, and take advantage of the Big Dogs, Big Deals event. All dogs 40 pounds and larger are available for an adoption fee of only $20. Talk with shelter staff to find the right dog that suits your family’s lifestyle, and remember that older dogs make excellent pets, too.

Spay or Neuter Dogs and Cats

Spayed and neutered animals have been shown to lead longer, healthier lives and have fewer behavioral problems than animals that have not been altered. Irving Animal Services (IAS) will be hosting low-cost spay/neuter events Oct. 4, 18 and 27. Reservations are required. View all upcoming events.

ID All Pets

All IAS field officers carry a microchip reader and return pets immediately to their homes when the information is available to them, completely bypassing the shelter. IAS is hosting a free microchipping event for Irving pet owners on Oct. 14. Microchipping and pet tags also can be purchased anytime at the shelter for a cost of $10 for microchipping and $3 to $5 for ID tags. Learn more at the Strays off the Streets page.

Ensure the Health of Pets

Free rabies vaccinations and microchipping will be available for pets of Irving residents at the IACC on Oct. 14. Low-cost vaccines and microchipping will be available at the Heritage Senior Center’s Pooch Fest 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 28. In addition, low-cost wellness and vaccination clinics will be held at the IACC Oct. 4, 18 and 27. View all upcoming events.

Support IAS and the Shelter

Consider donating time, money or supplies — such as towels, pet food, leashes, beds and toys. Animal Services has an Amazon Wish List, and donors can simply order online and have all items delivered straight to the IACC. Even the smallest effort can make a difference.

Find dogs of every type, size, age and personality at Irving Animal Services. All the animals at the shelter are waiting for a loving home, and now is a great time to look for a dog to love for a lifetime.

For those who are unable to consider adding a new pet to the household, there are other ways to help honor Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. Learn more about these and other events at the IACC’s Calendar of Events page at CityofIrving.org/Animal-Services.
